Leo Tolstoy
1828–1910
Before Gandhi, before Schumacher, Tolstoy was already arguing that industrial civilization had severed people from the sources of their own sustenance — and that the way back began with physical labor.
Bread Labor
Tolstoy’s concept of bread labor is simple: everyone should do manual work for their daily bread. Not as penance, not as exercise, but because depending entirely on others’ labor while doing none yourself is a form of violence.
He practiced what he preached — learning to make boots, working in the fields alongside peasants, living simply despite his wealth. The sincerity was sometimes awkward. The principle endures.
This directly influenced Gandhi’s spinning wheel and the Shaker commitment to dignity-of-labor.
The Inner Kingdom
Tolstoy’s anarchism was rooted in Christianity, not politics. He rejected the state because he rejected coercion. The “kingdom of God is within you” — authority comes from conscience, not institutions.
This made him a strange anarchist: no revolution, no organization, just individuals refusing to participate in violence and building alternatives. Which, as a practical program, looks a lot like what Thistlebridge is doing.
