The Tradition
The Rule of Saint Benedict requires that every guest be received “as Christ.” This isn’t metaphor — it’s operational instruction. The guest receives food, lodging, and attention. The monastery’s routine adjusts to accommodate them.
Ubuntu philosophy in southern Africa expresses a parallel idea: “I am because we are.” Hospitality isn’t generosity from surplus — it’s recognition that your existence depends on others.
In practice, hospitality means: there’s always enough food. There’s always space for another person. The door is open, and the welcome is genuine.
